CENTER FOR SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

Commercial Retail & Demonstration
New Construction
1,000 SF
Newark, DE

The Center for Sustainable Design is conceptualized as a simple wood container for high-performance building products and construction techniques. The design translates CSD’s vocation into a physical manifestation of low-embodied carbon, starting at the building’s core. Utilizing Cross Laminated Timber panels (CLT), the structure serves as a streamlined, natural backdrop to display the latest innovations in sustainable building technology. Due to local zoning stipulations, the commercial enclosure was limited to 1,000 square feet of development in the initial build out. Acknowledging these restrictions, the design incorporates a pavilion adjacent to the showroom. This juxtaposition of catalogued building materials with a programmable demonstration area creates an opportunity for integrated education. A secondary phase will feature a 10,000 square foot CLT warehouse and educational facility behind the showroom building.
