ABOUT | A Shaker farmhouse goes low carbon in the design of this custom home in Kennett Township, Pennsylvania seeking PHIUS+ 2018 Source Zero Certification.  A simple vernacular form steps down with its sloped site, facing its long axis south to gather in enough passive solar energy to heat during the winter months.  Prefabricated within 70 miles of the site using an innovative, wood-fiber based system by Holzraum, this house truly exemplifies the New Carbon Architecture, bringing low-embodied-carbon Passive House construction quickly to the market while avoiding the vagaries of stick-built construction.  Like the barns that dot its agrarian landscape, its simple in shape, relatively absent of ornament, and paired down in material choice allowing the homeowners to focus instead to the landscape beyond.
